Exploring environment and ethics with Jacaranda

Jacaranda make beautiful carpets and rugs, with an eye always on ethics and the environment, see below their full method statements and detailed commitment to Eco issues. Their rugs and carpets are one of a kind and we love to use them within our schemes.

UN Race to Zero

Jacaranda is proud to have joined the UN Race to Zero Campaign via the SME Climate Hub and in doing so has committed to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and reach net zero by 2040.  This protocol requires us to publicly report annual Scope 1 and 2 emissions which include all Jacaranda’s purchases of fuel, energy and refrigerants, you may view them here. We are putting in place concrete plans to reduce our emissions year on year.

Environmental certification

All of Jacaranda’s Flatweave ranges carry the Prodis rating.  This is a European test which sets strict maximum levels for VOC emissions and chemicals. Manufacturers have to limit environmental impact and enhance user-friendliness through the entire life-cycle of the carpet, from production to recyclability. www.pro-dis.info/gut.

Ethical labour practices

Handmaking floorcoverings is extremely labour intensive and we at Jacaranda need to be sure that everyone concerned is well treated, and that no children are involved in our production. For this reason, we have for many years supported GoodWeave and our factories never know when GoodWeave’s inspectors may arrive.

GoodWeave was founded in 1994 by Indian activist Kailash Satyarthi and his international organization has worked tirelessly to eradicate child labour from production via its unique labelling scheme, which includes independent, unannounced producer inspections, monitoring and certification. He was recognized in 2014 with a Nobel Peace Prize, for his drive to ensure that children should have their childhood restored, so they can laugh, learn and play. GoodWeave provides educational opportunities to children in weaving communities and works to ensure the fair treatment of adult carpet weavers.

How We Hand-Weave

The majority of Jacaranda’s handmade carpets and rugs are hand-woven.

Hand-weaving is an art that takes time and skill.

Each roll of Jacaranda handmade carpet passes through at least 64 skilled hands, across 280 hours, over approximately 31 days. From dying and drying yarn, winding bobbins, warping yarn and hand-weaving on looms; to adding and drying the backing, shearing, hand-finishing and quality control. Every pair of skilled hands involved at each stage, play their part in creating Jacaranda’s wonderful natural colour bank and character filled textures.
